A breakfast table is typically a small table that is useful for dining and other important family activities. It is generally located in or next to the kitchen.
Types
The Coleman Furniture website defines three types of dining tables: casual, formal and breakfast. The website says breakfast tables are casual and small, seating two to four people.
Purpose
Breakfast tables provide a good spot for family meals, homework or craft projects, Coleman Furniture says.
Trend
The trend toward the kitchen as the heart of the home is increasing, creating more need for breakfast tables, Coleman Furniture says. The kitchen was often the largest room in older homes. However, houses built in the 1960s through 1980s had small kitchens, and there was often no room for a table.
Considerations
"Kitchens are again receiving the attention they deserve," Coleman Furniture says, and homes are being built with larger kitchens. Therefore, there is room for a multipurpose table in the kitchen.
Location
Larger kitchens mean more room for a specific place for a breakfast table to go, a "breakfast nook." According to Breakfastnook.com, a breakfast nook is "a snug area just off the kitchen that has enough space for a small table and chairs."
