It is legal to garnish a bank account , but doing so requires a court order. There are, however, some types of funds that may be exempt from garnishment, including payments from Social Security, disability, unemployment, worker's compensation, life insurance benefits and child support payments. It must be proved that the money in the account came from a protected source in order to protect the bank account from garnishment.
