<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Melamine Alone is Not Toxic
Melamine is used to make durable plastics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), melamine alone has no toxicity in humans. At low doses, melamine poses no health threat, the WHO reports. When combined with cyanuric acid, melamine becomes toxic and may lead to kidney stones, according to HealthyChild.org.
On the Other: Melamine is Not Recommended for Infants
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agrees with the WHO that the general population can consume products containing melamine at concentrations below 2.5 parts per million. However, the FDA states that no level of melamine can be consumed by infants safely.
Bottom Line
The general population consumes melamine safely at concentrations below 2.5 parts per million. Healthychild.org advises that "it's better to be safe than sorry" when choosing dishes for use with infants. Buy dishes made of glass, stainless steel or ceramic.
