Speed and Memory
Except for the very newest desktops, it is possible to purchase laptop computers with the same memory and processing power as desktop computers.
Programs
Desktops and laptops of the same specifications are capable of using the same operating systems, including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and others. They can also run all of the same programs.
Peripherals
Printers, cameras, scanners, mp3 players and more can all be connected to both desktops and laptops.
Cost
While laptops used to cost many hundreds of dollars more than similarly equipped desktops, the prices are approaching parity.
