Although Loestrin 24 is an essentially harmless medication to healthy adults, the medication can cause complications if taken during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking Loestrin 24, it is important to stop taking the medication immediately.
Identification
Loestrin 24 tablets contain two main ingredients: ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone. The medication is used as a type of contraception to prevent pregnancy.
Function
Loestrin 24 prevents a woman from ovulating. Additionally, the hormones also cause changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Warning
Loestrin 24 should not be used by pregnant women or women who have recently given birth. The hormones in Loestrin 24 can be passed through breast milk, which could be dangerous to a nursing baby.
Birth Defects
According to Drugs.com, there is some concern that Loestrin 24 may cause birth defects. However, according to the medication's label, there has been no conclusive evidence to show that Loestrin 24 is linked to an increase in birth defects when taken during pregnancy.
Considerations
Nevertheless, the use of all oral contraceptives, such as Loestrin 24, should be halted during pregnancy. If you inadvertently take Loestrin 24 during early pregnancy, speak with your physician regarding any possible health risks.
