<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Don't Wash Suede or Leather Shoes
Sperry's suede and brushed leather Top-Siders should be cleaned with a wire or rubber brush to get rid of loose dirt, then a suede and nubuck (a type of leather) cleaner can be applied. Sperry's leather shoes should be scrubbed with a brush or wiped with a damp cloth, then covered with a cream leather protector.
On the Other: Wash Some Canvas and Mesh Shoes
Some of Sperry's canvas and mesh Top-Siders come marked with a machine-wash label. Sperry recommends unlacing the shoes and washing them in cold water with ordinary washing detergent. Remove excess water by putting them through the spin cycle twice, then stuff them with paper and let them air dry.
Bottom Line
While leather and suede shoes should be cleaned by hand, canvas shoes are made from a coarse cloth material and can handle the agitation of a washer fairly easily. Sperry recommends putting the shoes in the washer with like-colored towels.
