Dental prosthesis is a term used to describe any artificial device used to replace natural teeth. The materials used to make dental prosthetics vary according to the type and purpose of the device.
The Facts
Dentists who specialize in dental prosthetics are called prosthodontists. The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) lists types of dental prosthetics that include dentures, bridges, crowns (caps) and dental implants.
Dentures
Dentists use complete or partial dentures to provide the functions of a large number of missing teeth. The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine cites materials used for their creation that include plastic and supporting metal frameworks.
Bridges
Dentists use a form of dentures called a bridge to "bridge" the gap between one or more missing teeth. Materials used for bridges include porcelain, gold and metal clasps or attachments used to hold a bridge in place.
Crowns
Dentists use crowns to cover a tooth's biting surface and restore tooth function. The ACP cites materials used for crowns that include porcelain, metal and combinations of these two components.
Implants
Dentists use dental implants to permanently fix artificial teeth into the jaw. Titanium is a typical material used for this purpose.
