Some animals and plants, such as the African wild cat and the doom palm tree, are unique to Egypt. Some have a special symbolic meaning, such as the lotus flower that represents upper and lower Egypt.
African Wild Cat
The African wild cat is one of the closest relatives to the domesticated cat. It has a yellowish gray fur with stripes throughout, giving it the best camouflage in the desert.
Horned Viper
The horned viper, also known as the sand viper, is one of Egypt's most feared and poisonous snakes. Its color pattern of brown, red, gray and yellow gives it great camouflage in its environment. The head is flat and broad, and it has a hornlike scale above each eye.
Doom Palm
The doom palm produces fruit with the flavor of gingerbread. It is widely known and highly valued throughout Egypt and Abyssinia.
Lotus Flower
The lotus flower is the national flower of Egypt. It is the symbol of rebirth in Egypt, and the flower was used as a symbol of upper Egypt in art; the stem represents lower Egypt.
Sycamore Tree
The sycamore tree was used by the Egyptians for making wooden monuments and artillery units. It reaches heights of 65 feet and a diameter of 50 to 65 feet. It bears fruit that looks much like a fig.
