Procedure

To establish paternity, DNA blood or saliva and cell samples are taken from the mother, alleged father and child. When the mother's DNA is identified and separated from the child's DNA, the remaining genetic material will match the father's DNA.

Collection

Saliva and cell samples are taken from the area between the gums and the cheek, or from the inside surface of the cheek. The procedure is painless and there are no health risks.

Security

Since DNA paternity testing has a variety of legal applications, strict standards are observed by an appointed collector, who identifies each participant and witnesses sample collection. Participants also provide verification by signing their sealed samples.

Identification

Government issued photo identification, such as a passport or driver's license, provide proof of identity for DNA test participants. Infants may be identified with a birth certificate. To prevent substitution of family members, a photo may be taken of the alleged father and shown to the mother following negative results.

Considerations

A lengthier lab process can establish paternity without a sample from the mother. Paternity testing costs range from $400 to $2,000. Prenatal testing is expensive and involves pregnancy risks.
