Cat Illnesses
According to the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) can cause a cat to urinate frequently. Cats with FLUTD sometimes have bloody urine and urinate before they reach their litter boxes. They may need emergency medical assistance.
Identification
Cats that urinate frequently often strain to urinate and make noises when urinating that indicate some form of physical suffering.
Feline Health
The Cat World website makes the claim that frequent urination is a sign that your cat may be ill from a serious condition like diabetes.
Warning
Renal failure is also something that cat incontinence can be a symptom of, and a cat with kidney failure is an animal that requires a trip to the veterinarian.

If your cat already takes medication for a feline illness, then there is a chance that the medication may be causing frequent urination.
