  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Residential Lights Are Not Held to Code

Unlike commercial and public properties, there are no government codes to regulate where you can place an exterior wall light. Homeowners are free to place an outdoor light wherever they feel will look best. This applies to areas beside a front door, garage door, or on a side or corner of the house.

On the Other: Average Heights Are Standard

Contractors and light fixture suppliers recommend that exterior wall lights be placed approximately 66 inches from the base of the wall, considered eye level. Another method to set lights beside or around doors is to place the very top of the fixture either 1/5 or 1/6 of the entrance height.

    Bottom Line

If you are not sure where your exterior wall lights should be installed, contact an expert from a light fixture supplier for recommended placement. Also, some communities have their own requirements for residential outdoor lighting. Be sure and check with your homeowner's association to make sure you are not violating any preset guidelines.
