You can put a water heater insulation blanket around a gas water heater. Hire a professional plumber to install it, or follow the directions that come with it. Keep it away from the drain at the bottom and the flue at the top and don't obstruct airflow to the burner. Don't cover the thermostat or the top of the gas water heater.
