Steam flat irons are designed to be used on wet hair rather than dry. There are two benefits of using a steam flat iron: steam flat irons do not require hair to be dry, so you can eliminate the use of a hair dryer and many people feel that steam flat irons straighten hair more quicker than regular flat irons.
Steam flat irons damage hair just like dry flat irons. Whenever you use a thermal styling process, moisture is drawn from the hair, causing it to become dry, fizzy and broken if done in excess.
If you blow dry your hair before you straighten it, a steam flat iron will spare you some heat damage from styling. That said, whether you use a steam or a dry flat iron, you should not use it everyday to prevent heat damage to your hair.
