Like humans, there is usually an underlying reason why dogs get gassy. Veterinarians usually like to find out why a dog has gas before giving a dog gas medicine. Most gas in dogs can be attributed to either a food intolerance or eating behavior that when corrected reduces or altogether eliminate the problem.

On the Other: Some Dogs May Need Gas Medicine

In some cases a dog can benefit from taking an anti-gas medicine. Once a vet has ruled out any serious underlying intestinal problems and all dietary and lifestyle problems have been addressed, anti-gas medication may be merited. Additionally, if gas is painful a vet may prescribe an over-the-counter human medication like Gas-X. Gas-X only prevents gas pain and not odor and should never be given without advice from a veterinarian.

    Bottom Line

It is better to figure out what causes gas in dogs rather than just treating it with an anti-gas medicine. That said, gas medicine can help ease discomfort temporarily if necessary.
