    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

In 1965, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca started his first submarine sandwich shop. Trying to make money for school, he borrowed $1,000 from his friend Peter Buck and opened up a shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He called it "Pete's Super Submarines." Within a few years, he changed its name to "Subway" and started franchises in 1974.
