Doctors Alexander Wood (1817-1884) and Charles Pravaz (1791-1853) are given credit for independently developing the idea of a hypodermic syringe used to administer drugs. Wood first used the device to inject a patient in 1853. Dr. Wood's wife is the first known fatality from an overdose using a syringe.
