  • Spider angioma is a condition where blood vessels accumulate under the skin surface. It most often occurs in pregnant women and people with liver disease. Electrocauterization, liquid nitrogen therapy and radiosurgery are treatment options for spider angioma.

    Symptoms

The symptoms of spider angioma include lesions with a red center and extensions that branch out. Angiomas are usually found on the face and neck.

    Electrocauterization

Spider angioma can be treated with electrocauterization,in which a probe containing an electrical current is applied to the area with spider angioma. The probe generates heat, which seals off blood vessels to prevent bleeding. The part of the blood vessel to be removed is burned and destroyed.

    Liquid Nitrogen Therapy

Liquid nitrogen spray is also used to treat angioma. It is applied to the surface of the skin to freeze and destroy the blood vessels comprising the angioma.

    Stereotactic Radiosurgery

A less common treatment, radiosurgery, delivers a targeted dose of radiation to the spider angioma, destroying the blood vessels. The radiation doesn't affect the surrounding tissue.

    Considerations

A skin biopsy may be performed to diagnosis spider angioma. If you develop a new spider angioma, report it to your doctor so that related medical conditions can be ruled out.
