  • Alternative certification is available to those who wish to change career paths and hold at least a bachelor's degree. State requirements differ in each state.

    Georgia Example

Receiving employment with a school either as a paraprofessional or substitute teacher helps build a good rapport with teachers and staff of a school. Ask your supervisor about the Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (TAPP). Once you are hired as a teacher by a school you are accepted into the TAPP program.

    Testing

If you are in Georgia, sign up for the Georgia Content Exam basic skills test(GACE). Then you must pass the content exam of your choice. For example, if you wish to teach English then pass the GACE II language arts test.

    Praxis National Test

If you wish to teach English in any other state, then you must take the Praxis basic skills test, and pass the English content and pedagogy exam. Praxis is a nationally recognized test.

    Initial Certification

You will be issued a non-renewable certificate, which require you to complete a certain number of college courses before the expiration date of the certificate. In the meantime, you can teach with pay while juggling college coursework.

    Renewable Certificate

After you complete the requirements, you are issued a renewable certificate.
