Bariatric surgery, also known as gastric bypass surgery, is performed in some cases to help severely overweight patients meet their weight-loss goals. However, several criteria must be met before a person qualifies for bariatric surgery.
Extreme Obesity
People who are extremely obese, defined as having a body-mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, qualify for bariatric surgery, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Other People
If a patient has a somewhat lower BMI (35 to 39.9), the Mayo Clinic reports that she might still qualify for bariatric surgery if she also has another health problem caused by her weight.
Weight Limits
Bariatric surgery may not be an option for people who weigh more than 350 pounds (159.9 killos), according to MedlinePlus.
Other Exclusions
Other people who may not be able to have bariatric surgery include those who have had previous surgery on the abdomen and those who have severe disease of the heart or lungs, according to MedlinePlus.
Considerations
Weight-loss surgery is only an option for people who have been unable to reach or remain at a healthy weight using traditional approaches, according to the Mayo Clinic.
