Most doctors agree that saline breast implants are not expected to last forever. Unlike a silicone breast implant, when a saline implant is punctured, it deflates quickly, making it easier to diagnose the problem.
Causes
There are many reasons a saline implant might rupture. They can rupture from a trauma to the breast, during surgery from the use of surgical instruments and sometimes even during a mammogram. The most common cause of a rupture is from normal wear and tear over time.
Visible Side Effect
The main side effect of a punctured saline implant it the change in the shape and size of the breast.
Internal Side Effect
When a saline implant ruptures, the saline leaks out and is absorbed into the body. The saline is not harmful to the body, but the shell of the implant left behind can cause problems. The shell of the implant can fold and form a pointed edge that could damage internal tissue.
External Side Effect
On the rare occasion, if the shell of an implant folds, the pointed edge can break through the skin causing external problems and even scarring.
Treatment
A punctured implant can be surgically removed or replaced. Replacing an implant is not a big deal and often less serious than the original surgery.
