Bright red blood in the stool may be caused by a condition in the rectum or elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. While most episodes of rectal bleeding are mild, it is important to see your doctor to obtain a correct diagnosis.
Identification
Rectal bleeding may be mild or severe. Moderate rectal bleeding may be accompanied by blood clots, and more severe bleeding may cause bright red blood in large quantities in the stool. This is known as hematochezia.
Symptoms
Rectal bleeding can cause a large amount of blood loss, which may lead to weakness, fainting, dizziness, low blood pressure, or a drop in blood pressure when a person moves from a sitting or lying position to standing. In rare cases, patients may go into shock from the loss of blood.
Causes
Bright red blood in the stool may be caused by an anal fissure, which is a tear in the lining of the anus. Hemorrhoids and diverticulosis are other common causes of rectal bleeding. In rare cases, bright red blood in the stool can be a symptom of colon cancer or polyps.
Treatment
The treatment for bright red blood in the stool begins with determining the cause of the bleeding. A colonoscopy is a procedure in which the doctor examines the rectum with a scope to determine the cause of bleeding. While there are risks with this procedure, it is a generally safe and effective diagnostic test. Once the cause of bleeding has been determined, the physician will take steps to stop the bleeding.
Considerations
Most cases of bright red blood in the stool will clear up on their own without medical treatment. However, if bleeding is excessive or is continuous, it may be necessary to see your doctor.
