Granite is a hard natural stone that makes a great countertop surface. Not all granites are equally porous. Generally the darker the stone the less porous it is. The less porous a stone, the more it resists penetration and staining. Using coasters and immediately cleaning up spills with a sponge or soft cloth will minimize stains.
On the Other: All Sealers Are Not Created Equal
Some sealers will protect your countertops for up to 15 years with proper care maintenance. Many common household cleaners contain ammonia and other ingredients that can attack the stone. Using a sponge and water for general cleaning and a stone cleaner weekly will extend the life of the sealant.
Bottom Line
With proper care a granite countertop can last a lifetime. Testing the surface yearly will let you know if you need to apply another coat of sealer. Generally the higher quality of the sealer and the darker the granite the more time you can go between resealings.
