  • Cremation is quickly becoming as accepted as traditional burial across the country. The lower cost is a major factor contributing to the rise in this mode of disposition, but there are still many variables affecting the price.

    "Direct" Cremation

A "direct" cremation is the most affordable option and includes no viewing or services. Generally, the price does include transportation, the actual cremation and a container suitable for cremation. Funeral home prices vary greatly and can range from around $500 to around $3,000 for the direct cremation.

    Variables

The services you choose or do not choose will impact your final price. In the United States, federal law states that funeral homes must offer more affordable, alternative caskets for cremation purposes as opposed to the higher end wood and metal caskets. The family can also choose to provide their own container as long as it meets crematory requirements.

    States Vary

Most states will allow the family to obtain the permits, death certificate and other associated paper work directly without having to go through a funeral home, but there are a few that do not. If you do not deal with a funeral home, the cost is lowered considerably.

    Funeral Home or Crematory?

If you go through a funeral home, you will automatically have a service fee generally ranging from $500 to over $2,000. This does not include the cremation, embalming, visitation fees or any other selections a family might desire. This initial fee differs greatly from city to city and even from funeral home to funeral home within a city. Unless your state has laws against it or the crematory only deals through funeral homes, you can deal directly with the crematory and avoid the cost of a funeral home.

    After Cremation

If the cremated remains are buried, there will be the associated costs of a burial plot and cemetery services. However, if the remains will be handed over to the family, the total cost for the cremation will be less.
