The shade-loving impatiens is generally regarded as completely safe for dogs, as long as no toxic pesticides have been applied to it. In fact, impatiens is often recommended for pet-friendly gardens. Impatiens is not known to cause allergic reactions in pets.
On the Other: A Few Sources Claim Otherwise
A few sources include impatiens on their list of toxic plants for pets. Because identical language is used on many of these websites, it seems likely that the plant was added to the toxic list (perhaps erroneously) by one source, which was then treated as an authoritative reference by other sources.
Bottom Line
The jury is still out on this one. While many sources insist that impatiens is harmless to dogs, others claim just the opposite. Whether the latter claim is a mistake or not, it may be best to err on the side of caution and avoid planting impatiens in your garden.
