  • Gout---a form of arthritis---results from excess uric acid levels in the blood. Gout attacks are acute, resulting in swollen, painful joints---most often in the big toe. Treatments include medications, dietary changes and self-care.

    Reducing Inflammation

Certain drug treatments can reduce inflammation. Your doctor might prescribe anti-inflammatory pain relievers or give you corticosteroid injections.

    Addressing Uric Acid Levels

Other drug treatments include those that inhibit uric acid production or help remove it from the body. These medications can reduce complications of an attack. Examples of gout-blocking treatments include Zyloprim, Aloprim and Uloric. Probalan helps the kidney excrete uric acid from the body.

    Dietary Suggestions

Alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends eating cherries in all forms during an active attack as research indicates they can reduce the inflammation associated with gout attacks. Eliminate consumption of red meat, organ meat, sardines and anchovies; they are rich in purines, which form uric acid.

    Compresses

Using a hot compress for three minutes and a cold one for 30 seconds several times can ease pain. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests nettle tea compresses as well; add 1 or 2 tsp. to a cup of hot water to make the solution.

    Natural Treatments

Certain natural substances can combat inflammation and ease pain. The University of Maryland Medical Center lists the following on their website: omega-3 fatty acids, devil's claw, cat's claw, bromelain and turmeric. Ask your doctor for appropriate dosages.
