  • With their pollination of flowers and production of honey, bees are a wonderful part of the natural world. When they set up their hive in your eaves or in a tree near your home, however, they can turn into pests that need to be dealt with. Luckily, there are options available to deal with bees when they become a problem.

    Call a Beekeeper

Contact a beekeeper (you can find a local one online or in a phone directory). Most beekeepers will be eager to come and locate the hive and then take it safely with them. This is because the number of wild bees has plummeted in recent years, and beekeepers have been hard pressed to maintain their supplies of bees and honey up to anywhere near the level they once were. With one action you can rid yourself of what you think is a pest while helping a local business and aiding the disaster of a shrinking bee population.

    Killing the Bees

If you have a bee problem that is bad enough for you to want to eradicate them, then find where the hive is located, possibly in the eaves of your house. The bees will return to the hive at dusk, so use this opportunity to follow their flight patterns. Once it is dark, don protective gear, including a face mask, gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt. Make sure your legs, ankles, and feet are completely covered.

    Insecticide

Purchase a long-distance spray insecticide made specifically for flying, stinging insects. Raid or Baygon are good readily available options. Stand back from the hive and spray away. These insecticides act quickly, so there is very little danger of an angry swarm of bees emerging and attacking. Leave the hive until morning, then spray it again. Knock the hive down and put it in a garbage bag for disposal.

    Professional Help

If the thought of dealing with bees yourself is too frightening, you can always look in a phone directory for pest exterminators. There are sure to be a dozen companies or more in your phone book that will gladly take your check and get rid of the bees properly.
