Usually a last alternative for weight loss, lap band surgery is a bariatric surgery that promotes weight loss by restricting the amount of food that enters the stomach by a surgically implanted device around the stomach.
Candidates
If you are between the ages of 18 and 55, psychologically stable, have a history of obesity as well as failed weight loss attempts, a body mass index (BMI) above 40, or a BMI between 30 to 40 with obesity related health conditions such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure or diabetes, you are a good candidate for lap band surgery.
Misconceptions
Most generally, individuals with hypothyroidism are not good candidates for lap band surgery. However, there are some individuals with hypothyroidism who have had the surgery, under close monitoring of a physician.
Considerations
Although the above is generally the criteria needed to be a good candidate for the weight loss surgery, there are some instances your physician may consider you a good candidate anyway. For example, if you are more than 100 lbs. overweight or if you are younger than 18 or older than 55, and there is a severe need for the surgery.
Determination
Even if you feel you may not be a good candidate with hypothyroidism and are interested in proceeding with the lap band surgery, you should talk to your doctor in order to determine if you are an acceptable patient.
Potential
Individuals who have hypothyroidism and have had lap band surgery, may or may not have to continue hypothyroid medications. This is a factor your physician will decide.
Potential
If you have hypothyroidism and medical insurance, it is important to discuss if you are qualified for the lap band surgery with your physician. Insurance companies have certain guidelines and criteria you must meet in order to qualify for the surgery before they will pay for the procedure.
