<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Great for Ambiance
Recessed lighting can be a great choice for your family room and is widely used by builders today. It creates a "downlighting" look which brings warmth and depth to the room. Recessed lighting can make an area look larger by washing a wall with light. It can be excellent for accenting special areas of the family room, such as a favorite picture or book case.
On the Other: Insufficient for General Lighting
Recessed lighting is only a supplement to general lighting and other sources will be needed to light the room completely. A table lamp will be needed for a reading area, for example. Many recessed lights are limited to 75-watt bulbs, which can make for frequent replacement.
Bottom Line
With energy-efficient bulbs, you can extend the life of your recessed lights and the look is lovely for any room. Using recessed lighting will create a warm, inviting atmosphere, making the family room everybody's favorite gathering center.
