<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: AAP Warns Against It
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies under 6 months of age consume no food or drink besides breast milk or formula. There is no evidence to support the use of Sprite or any other soft drink to relieve a baby's gas or colic symptoms, and carbon dioxide bubbles in soda will likely worsen gas pain.
On the Other: A Common Home Remedy
Many parents, grandparents and caregivers routinely use Sprite as a home remedy for gas pain, since many adults use clear sodas for this purpose. Caregivers may believe that Sprite is safer than other treatments for pain associated with gas. Sugary drinks may temporarily distract a baby from his discomfort, providing the illusion of relief.
Bottom Line
There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that Sprite is a safe or effective treatment for gas pain in babies. Soft drinks provide no known benefits to young children and may worsen a baby's gas pain.
