  • Subaru engines, like all engines, contain markings which let the consumer know every single detail about the engine. From the car model and year, all the way back to when and where the engine was made, this number says it all. However, in reading this number on your Subaru, how will you know which marking specifies the year it was made? Time to take a look at VIN decoding.

    VIN Decoding

Every engine built by Subaru has a VIN---vehicle identification number---etched just below the valve cover on the engine block. It will be 17 characters in length, and each one has a meaning that will tell you about the car and the engine. The 10th character in the VIN will tell you the model year of the Subaru. When car manufacturers began putting VINs on vehicles in 1980, they began with the letter A to represent the year a vehicle was made. They then went sequentially through the alphabet until the year 2001, when they started with the number 1. In the year 2010, they started over with the alphabet and the letter A once again. A couple of examples: If the VIN's 10th character is an X, the vehicle was made in 1999. If it is a 4, 2004 was the year of manufacture. Once you have decoded the VIN, you will know when the vehicle was made.
