  • Shou wu pian is a Chinese herb that also goes by many other names, such as He Shou Wu, Climbing Knotweed, and Fo-Ti. It has been used to treat many conditions including insomnia, liver and kidney problems, and dizziness.

    Oral Dangers

    Shou wu pian may be dangerous if taken orally. Liver damage is one thing that it may cause, in both children and adults.

    Pregnancy

    Shou wo pian should not be used if pregnant or nursing. The effects for both oral and topical use are not completely known, but the chemicals in it can pass through breast milk and may cause diarrhea.

    Liver

    Shou wu pian has been shown to cause hepatitis and other problems with the liver. It may also worsen liver disease if already present.

    Blood

    One side effect of shou wu pian may be blood sugar level abnormalities.

    Surgery

    Problems may arise during and after having surgery if taking shou wu pian. If you are planning on having surgery you should avoid taking or using it for at least two weeks before the surgery.
