  • Junk mail is a problem for many people in the United Kingdom. In fact, since 1990, the amount of companies sending out direct mail to consumers has doubled. Many people in the United Kingdom find great deals via direct mail, but there are those who find it to be an annoyance and just want it to stop.

    Mailing Preferential Service

The Mailing Preferential Service (MPS) is a free service for U.K. residents with which they can register their names for removal from direct mailing lists. There are three ways a person can register his name--online, by phone or by mail. Registration can take up to four months to become active and lasts for five years. Re-registration is necessary after five years to keep names off direct mailing lists. Registering online is quick and straightforward. The MPS website is easy to navigate and helps customers register their names with easy-to-follow steps. The information needed in order to register a name and address with the MPS is simple: the reason for registration, personal details such as name, address and email, and the source from which the MPS website was found. Once this information has been entered, a confirmation email will be sent, on which a link is provided. Clicking on the link is the final step in registration. Registration can also be achieved by calling (0845) 703 4599, or sending your address information to Mailing Preference Service (MPS), DMA House, 70 Margaret Street, London, W1W 8SS.

    Direct Contact

If you have given your permission for your name to be added to certain mailing lists, for example, those belonging to companies you have been a customer of in the past, you will need to contact them directly. Search these companies' websites for their customer service department and give them a call, informing them you no longer wish to be on their mailing list.
