  • The digital age makes creating, editing, and sharing your own movies easier than ever. Portable electronics, including the iPod, make it easy for you to carry hours of footage around in your pocket for easy viewing. Sticking your own movies on your iPod is even easier than transferring DVD footage.

    Connecting Device

Connect your video device to your computer, using a USB or IEEE 1394 interface interface. Wait for your computer to recognize the device. An icon representing the device should appear on your desk top. If it does not, double-click "My Computer" (on a PC) or Macintosh HD (on an Apple) to see if the icon appears there. If you still can't find it try reconnecting the device.

    Transferring Video

Double-click the icon representing your video device. You will see all of the files contained on your video device inside. Find the video files that you wish to transfer on your video device. Select them by control clicking (on a PC) or command clicking (on an Apple). Drag and drop the videos on to your desk top or into a special folder created for the purpose of holding these videos.

    File Formats

Your iPod will only properly play certain file formats. These formats are .m4v, .mov, and .mp4. If your recording device does not save files in this format, you will have to download a program and convert the files to the proper format before adding them to your iPod.

    Adding to iTunes

Open your iTunes software by double-clicking the iTunes icon. Select all your movies in the proper file format. Select and drag them into iTunes, which will then add these files into your iTunes video library.

    Syncing

Connect your iPod to your computer with your iPod cable. Wait for iTunes to recognize the iPod as an external device. Click the iPod icon on the left menu of iTunes to select it as the drive. Click the tab for "Movies" and make sure that the boxes for "Sync Movies" and "Automatically Include All Movies" are checked. Then click "Sync" within that page to update your iPod with the movies you have just added to iTunes.

    Testing

Disconnect your iPod from your computer properly by clicking the eject button next to the name of your iPod in iTunes. The iPod will tell you when it is safe to physically disconnect it from the cable. Select "Videos" from the main iPod menu, then find the video you have just installed on the iPod. Select and play it to make sure that it has transferred properly.
