I'm sure the first man would say he did it "for the principle." If the $46 dinner was terrible, the man wanted to prove the point that he shouldn't be asked to pay for something he didn't get, and the attorney fees he incurred were a secondary consideration. Perhaps the speeding judge felt he was above the law, was insulted by the ticket and tried to lie his way out, never dreaming his veracity would be challenged.
