I think is is mainly that many more women ask for support when they get depressed. Men do not wish to appear "weak", so the will not ask for counselling. The counselling services support those who ask for support.

I think women are for help.. so in turn they are helped more. Also women are (not being sexest) better with their emotions and can work things out faster. Men wait till its too late or can hide the depression better and they end up..

Well you get it. My brother is just now getting help.. and I didn't even see that he was depressed. Thank GOD the rope broke. SO, Thats my answer. :(

I'm not sure that statistic is exactly right, but it is true that more men commit suicide. Women attempt for often than men, but men are more successful. It is assumed that this is because men opt for more fool proof methods like using guns. Women try pills or cut their wrists which takes longer and doesn't always work. Because of this most women who survive their attempts end up getting help. And like other people are saying, women are more likely to seek help while men will keep it bottled up and deny that they have a problem.

It's a problem, for sure. Men are underserved in the social services. They also tend to wait longer before asking for help. We need to, as a society, make it more acceptable for men to talk about emotions, so they feel less stigma when asking for help. And the funders need to put more resources towards preventing suicide in young/middle aged men.

Men are expected to put up or shut up.

If we go postal as a result- it just shows what brutes we are.

you have lot's of good answers, and to add to them, since the 1970's "women movement" retailers and businesses have concentrated lots of efforts into marketing things for women.

so, they make them feel like they need these special products/ medications because they are women, and have a market to sell to. have you noticed the drugs they claim are special for women, because of special needs.

the whole "women depression" is a marketing scheme to sell anti depression drugs to women.
