Help answer this question below.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
8 parts -- 1 out of 8 is 1 part
|12|34|56|78|
4 parts -- 1 out of 4 is 2 parts
divide number of parts.
Just turn the fraction that the other one is to be divided by upside down and multiply them. So you get 1/8 x 4/1 = 4/8 = 1/2.
Dividing by 1/4 is the same as multiplying by 4. Dividing by x is multiplying by 1/x. So dividing by 1/y is multiplying by 1/(1/y), which is y. 1/4 times 4 is 4/8 which is 1/2,
See it this way: we want to know how much pieces of cake each person gets in average,
if 1/4 people get 1/8 piece of cake.
To see this, we could just multiply everything (people and pieces of cake) by 4:
=> 4/4 people will get 4/8 piece of cake.
Please notice that this does not change the average.
After simplification, 1 person will get 1/2 piece of cake.
because 1/8th is half of 1/4th
