A notoriously addicting drug, heroin is a hard habit to break. There are a number of treatments that have proven to be effective, though addictions to heroin are broken easiest if caught early.
Methadone
Used successfully for over 30 years in treating heroin addition, methadone is a synthetic opiate. It can negate heroin's effects and eliminate most withdrawal symptoms.
LAMM
LAMM is a similar drug to methadone and has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms from heroin withdrawal. Because of its strength, LAMM should only be taken in three doses per week.
Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine is a newer medical treatment and has less of an opiate effect than methadone and other drugs. It is also less addicting than methadone and has fewer accompanying overdose problems.
Detoxification
Not a complete treatment in and of itself, detoxification helps patients shed withdrawal symptoms while getting off heroin.
Behavioral Therapy
There are several types of behavioral therapy to help recovering addicts increase skills and coping abilities, restoring a feeling of normalcy to behavior and brain function.
