    A cover slip is used when looking at a slide through a microscope. It is usually a thin piece of plastic or glass that lies over the object being examined. The cover slip serves three main purposes: keep the objective lens from touching the object, flatten the object for better examination and, if the substance on the slide is liquid, keep it from evaporating.
