Extended wear contacts offer many advantages. You sleep in the lenses and only have to change them every week or two. If you are awakened in the middle of the night, you wake up with clear vision. However, there are some important drawbacks to extended wear contacts.
Comfort
Because the lenses are not cleaned daily, protein deposits may build up on the lenses, making them less comfortable than contacts that are cleaned more frequently.
Infections
The lenses are worn at night and, therefore, may decrease the amount of oxygen to the cornea. This lack of oxygen could potentially lead to eye infections.
Blindness May Occur
In the most extreme cases, extended wear contacts can lead to an eye infection which could cause blindness.
Considerations
Extended wear contacts are not for everyone. It is important that your eye practitioner give you a thorough eye exam and determine if you are a good candidate for extended wear lenses
Warning
Many serious eye problems result when people try to wear the lenses for longer than they are meant to be worn to try to save money and extend the life of their contacts. Do not do this. It may end up costing much more in the long run.
