A parent cannot force a child to seek emancipation, but usually, the parent(s) must agree to an emancipation for a judge to grant it. Emancipation of a child under the age of 18 is rare. Generally, a child must be completely financially independent or married (with the parents' consent), or join the military. Specific laws vary by state.
