  • Quicken is a popular financial software application created by Intuit. The application is commonly used by individuals and small business owners to help automate bookkeeping functions. The application also provides users with ready-made reports and graphs to help identify spending trends. Within these reports there are ways to customize your views. One option allows users to add subtotals to reports and graphs.

    Layout & Display Change

Users of Quicken software can change the layout and display of certain numbers. You can change the title, row headings, category, class, account names, payee and column headings. While not all reports can be customized, the process is the same to determine the options that can be changed.

    The Mechanics

To create subtotals, select the "Business" menu, then "Invoices and Estimates" and then "Invoice Items." Click "New" and then enter a name for the new subtotal. Enter a description on each sale that uses this subtotal item. Click "OK." The next time you want to use this option, you can select the subtotal name from the item list while in the estimate or invoice form.

    Common Groupings

For subtotals, users can group totals by transaction or by investment report. You can also select to group and total transactions by time period, such as month or quarter, or by category. Other groupings include account, tax schedule, security type, investing goal or asset class. Ultimately, the categories you decide to use will depend on the scope of your business; however, the more detailed you can provide up front, the more detail you will have come tax time.
