White eggs in the human hair are called nits. These are the eggs of lice, a small insect that lives on the scalp and feeds on blood.
Significance
Head lice is the second most common disease that affects children, according to the Mayo Clinic. Lice is very contagious and can be spread through contact.
Nits
Lice lay their nits on the close to the root of the hair. They use an adhesive to make the eggs stick, making them very difficult to remove.
Identification
Nits look like dandruff except when you shake your head they do not flake off. According to the Illinois Department of Health, nits need seven to 10 days to incubate into lice.
Considerations
Nits need the warmth that is generated from the human scalp to survive. If the nit is removed from the head it will die without the heat.
Removal
The use of a nit comb or special shampoo designed to kill the eggs is required to get rid of them. Even after the egg hatches, the shell will remain on the hair until it falls or grows out.
