If you are trying to lose weight, you may be considering a weight loss supplement to help the process along. Hoodia is one natural option, though its effectiveness is not well studied.
Hoodia
Hoodia, short for Hoodia gordonii, is a cactus-like plant native to the Kalahari desert. It is processed and sold dietary supplement to help curb appetite and help with weight loss.
History
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, hoodia cactus stems were eaten by African Bushmen to help control their appetites when they were off on long hunts.
Supplements
Hoodia can be purchased as a dietary supplement in many forms, such as powders, capsules, teas, liquids and chews.
Effectiveness
According to Adrienne Youdim, MD, of the Comprehensive Weight Loss Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, there are no scientific reports that have been published that support the use of hoodia.
Side Effects
There are no known side effects to hoodia, and it is not a stimulant. However, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, hoodia has not been studied enough for all potential risks or side effects to be determined.
Precautions
If you are considering taking this product, consult your doctor first. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have diabetes, a blood disorder, allergies or an eating disorder, do not use unless your doctor confirms it is okay to take.
