  • The criteria for receiving state-specific VA benefits vary state by state. To receive federal VA benefits, an individual must have served a minimum of 180 days in active duty before September of 1980. Veterans who have served after 1980 have to serve a minimum of two years. The time limits are not applicable to veterans who are medically discharged with a VA service-connected stipend for disability.
