  • Sticking to a low-cholesterol diet can be tricky. When ordered by a doctor, a low-cholesterol meal plan will detail the foods that a patient can eat. Those just trying to cut down on cholesterol on their own, however, often have a hard time deciding which foods to choose.

    Types

Made from the milk of cows, goats, sheep or buffalo, there are many types of cheese. Some varieties are high in cholesterol and should be eaten in moderation or avoided altogether. Other types, however, can be an integral part of a low-cholesterol diet.

    Soft

Soft cheeses such as feta and bleu cheese have high cholesterol contents, coming in at 25 mg of cholesterol per 1-oz. serving. Feta and other soft cheeses are often recommended as alternatives to other cholesterol-laden cheeses, however, as they are remarkably flavorful in small amounts.

    Whey

Whey cheeses like whole-milk ricotta are high in cholesterol, packing 125 mg of cholesterol into a 1-oz. serving.

    Hard

Hard cheeses like Parmesan can be an excellent addition to a low-cholesterol diet, as 1 tbsp. weighs in at 5 mg of cholesterol. Like soft cheeses, small amounts of hard cheese can be a suitable replacement for higher cholesterol options.

    Processed

Processed cheeses like American are high in cholesterol. A 1-oz. slice of American cheese packs 22 mg of cholesterol.
