Papillons are one of the most intelligent and beautiful toy dog breeds. Named for the French word for butterfly, these dogs are meant to be tiny and pretty. However, some papillons have coats that do not grow very full or they suffer from hair loss.
Genetics
While it is not common, some papillons are genetically predisposed to growing shorter, less full coats.
Health Issues
Papillons sometimes suffer from various health problems that cause hair loss. These include allergies, dry skin and thyroid problems. Take the dog to the vet at the first sign of hair loss to rule out a health condition.
Environment
Sensitive to their environment, these dogs can suffer from hair loss when kept in humid places.
Bathing
Excessive bathing contributes to problems with a papillon's coat. Bathing strips away essential oils, causing hair to break.
Brushing
Brushing and rough grooming contribute to hair loss, causing hair to become damaged and broken. The ear area is especially sensitive to poor grooming.
