  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Diesel in The Furnace

Most home furnace systems that use number 2 fuel can also run on off road diesel. Diesel has the advantage that it is somewhat cheaper than number 2 fuel oil. You can also of course run down to the gas station and fill a five gallon jug of diesel and not have to await a delivery of number 2 fuel oil.

On the Other: Diesel Does Present some Problems

Diesel oil is more viscous than fuel oil. Therefore it burns just as well but since it is thicker it can cause flow problems in the feed system.

    Bottom Line

Diesel is a good substitute for number 2 fuel oil in an emergency. However, number 2 fuel oil is refined especially for home furnaces and is the safest and most efficient option. Diesel can especially cause you problems in very cold weather where it gets very thick and flows very poorly.
