I remember studying something similar at school - about why fog lights are amber/yellow. Apparently the colloids and emulsions in the atmosphere somehow process the light reflected from this colour, making it the one colour that will filter through such things as fog and dust, whereas other colours don't make it through the atmosphere in these conditions.

The colour yellow was chosen for school buses becasue it is the easiest to see on the colour spectrum of all the other possible colours. So when driving down the road you can see yellow so much better than you could see any other colour... They even started to make fire trucks yellow these days becasue red is very hard to see when driving and yellow is the most easiest colour to see on the road.
