  • The total body nuclear bone scan is a procedure where a radio-pharmaceutical medication containing a weak dose of radiation is injected into your system to allow a specialized camera to take pictures of your entire body.

    Function

Total body nuclear bone scans are performed to help physicians diagnose or rule out certain conditions such as cancer, arthritis, infections, blood clots and internal bleeding. Total body nuclear scans also measure your body's response, if you are undergoing certain treatments.

    Preparation

Total body nuclear bone scans require no special preparation. Drinking and eating before the scan is allowed, unless your physician gives you other instructions. Removal of jewelry and metal objects should be done before your scan.

    Effects

Total body nuclear scans pose no greater risk to you than a conventional x-ray procedure. The injection and the need to lie still during the procedure might be mildly uncomfortable.

    Time Frame

According to the Mayo Clinic, a total body nuclear bone scan can take up to 60 minutes to complete.

    Considerations

If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, inform your physician. Total body nuclear bone scans are not generally performed on pregnant women due to concerns of radiation exposure to the fetus.
