  • Refrigerated ships are used to transport perishable foods around the world. Also known as reefer ships, they are cargo ships known for their speed in transporting cargo.

    Types

There are two types of cargo ships--a side-door vessel and a conventional ship. Side-door ships are easier to load with accommodations for loading equipment like forklifts. Conventional vessels are loaded with cranes through a well cut into the top of the hold.

    Features

Reefers are floating refrigerators. There are outlets on the deck into which the refrigerated containers are placed.

    Function

Reefer ships keep frozen foods while shipping from one point to another. The deck also holds refrigerated containers. The hold has bins for fruit, hooks to hold meat carcasses and areas for pallets of perishables.

    Considerations

Because they carry food, reefer ships operate under a higher level of cleanliness than do regular cargo ships. The walls inside the hold are covered in metal that is easy to clean. The temperatures are maintained at levels that will prevent spoiling.

    Size

This area is well insulated, which makes the hold of a reefer ship smaller than that of a regular cargo ship that doesn't require the insulation. A reefer ship can usually carry the equivalent of 40 to 250 truckloads of goods.
